EDO4400 - 37 Glyde Path Road, Dorchester; salvage recording 1957

Rescue work was undertaken by Mr R N R Peers and Mr H S L Dewar, when a small piece of mosaic was discovered in 1957 during digging of foundation trenches for an extension to the rear of 37 Glyde Path Road, Dorchester. The fragment of mosaic was found about 0.6m (2 ft) below ground level about 3m (10 ft) east of the SE corner of 37 Glyde Path Road, lying on more extensive remains of its cement bedding. Three metres (10 ft) further east were the fragmentary remains of what was probably the east wall of the room containing the mosaic floor. These wall footings were of flint and measured 0.6m (2ft) wide. On the eastern side was a coarse red tessellated floor at least 2.75m (9 ft) longt, perhaps the border of another mosaic, or part of a plain tesselated room or corridor. The destruction layer above this floor contained much painted wall plaster. No dateable finds were recovered. A recent wall foundation and a well with a steyning of flint and limestone, probably of post-medieval date, were also recorded (1).
