Description
Archaeological Observations were made by R A H Farrar and by workmen during the excavation of a gas main trench along the lengths of High East Street, High West Street and on to Bridport Road during 1955.
From east to west these observations entailed:
i) 25 yards of 18th century road metalling at the foot of High East Street on the south side (1).
Ii) a 19th century brick lined conduit outside the King's Arms, High East Street (2)
iii) a further brick lined conduit and cellar outside the entrance to St. Peter's Church, High West Street (2).
Iv) evidence for the external ditches of the Roman Town defences at the junction of High West Street and The Grove (3) (4).
V) a further brick lined conduit in a northerly branch to the gas main at the SW end of The Grove (2).
