Excavations to the rear of South Grove Cottage, at Lee Motors were carried out by G E Kirk in the autumn of 1938, prior to the development of the site by Lee Motors. Three phases of Roman activity were identified. Phase 1 comprised postholes and pit with 2nd century AD pottery. Phase 2 comprised an oven and pit and chalk and mortar surfaces dating to the late 3rd century AD. Phase 3 comprised parts of two rooms of a Roman stone-footed building, with two infant burials in the northern room and a hearth in each room, probably Late 3rd/4th century AD. (1-2)
