Description

During the digging of the foundations for All Saints' Church House in March 1898, a fragment of tesselated floor was found (1) (2). This was probably on the south side of the building as apparently the floor seemed as if it extended under Durngate Street (2). It was found at a depth of about 2.1-2.4m (7 or 8 feet) (1). The fragment was lifted and given to the Dorset County Museum (2) (3), but cannot be traced (1). It was a length of guilloche in black, white and two greys (4) (5). No trace of the associated building was recorded. The size of the fragment is not known, nor is it clear whether it was in situ.
