Description

The remains of an inhumation were found with a handled beaker during the making of the railway cutting on the SE side of Poundbury Camp in 1854. It seems to have been found together with the frontal bones of a child at a depth of 7 or 8 ft below the surface in the railway cutting through Whitfield. It is not clear whether this means the burial was on the western side of Poundbury Camp, west of which is Whitfield Farm, or on the eastern side, where the Roman cemetery is situated [1]. The jar was of BBW AND 4 ins high [2] and probably dates to the 2nd-4th centuries AD [1].
