Description
C. Sparey Green observed and recorded a small area (3m x 1.75m) that had been cleared during gardening operations at the rear of 18 Orchard Street, Dorchester during April 1998. Limited further excavation took place in the NW quadrant of this area (1).
A layer of redeposited Roman building debris was found to seal up to a metre of fine ash, over-fired clay tiles, and occupation of second- or third-century AD date. Similar deposits have been observed close to the defences elsewhere in town (2).
