Description
C.J.S Green observed the excavation of a telephone cable trench during 1965 along the east side of Trinity Street, Dorchester.
Two cambered layers of metalling separated by clay and based on a chalk deposit were revealed alongside the east kerb close to the foot of Trinity Street. The layers were at a depth of c. 3 ft and were c. 20 ins thick in all. The south edge of the road was not exposed but it would have been at least 21 ft wide. The direction was thought to be slightly south of due west. Overlying deposits of chalk and loam were thought to be the base of the roman town rampart, although the metalling was some 8 yards too far north to coincide with the line of the sub-rampart metalling of a different construction at Lee Motors 30 yds to the west.
