A desk-based assessment comprising a data search of the Dorchester UAD, consulation of historic maps and documents held at the Dorset History Centre and the use of map regression.
Previous excavations on the site had identified Roman stone wall footings which cut through earlier Roman mortar layers and chalk floors dating from the 1st-2nd centuries AD. These were significantly truncated by post-medieval cellars. In fact all archaeological deposits had been removed by cellars in the entire eastern half of the site and part of the north western and south western sections. Modern scarping of the ground along the eastern edge and service trenches may also have damaged archaeological deposits.
However, it is feasible that archaeological deposits may survive within an area between the western boundary and the adjacent site of the previous archaeological intervention, although these remains may also be partly truncated by the foundations of post-medieval buildings.
