EDO4760 - Site of discovery of Early Iron Age Brooches from the South End of South Street, Dorchester

A site visit was conducted by J. Rigg of the Ordnance Survey Archaeological Division on the 18 June 1954 at the site of the discovery of Early Iron Age brooches from the south end of South Street, Dorchester. His site notes are recorded in the OS record card as follows. No further information was obtained upon these finds during field investigation. He later interviewed Col. Drew, curator of DCM, on the 22 July 1954 concerning the find. Col. Drew is recorded as saying: I remember two only from Dorchester. One was a lead brooch – a degenerate Halstatt and the other a Halstatt bronze brooch. They were labelled “south end of South Street” Dorchester and they were bought by Pitt Rivers at a London sale. I very much doubt the precise siting.
