A site visit was conducted by J Rigg of the Ordnance Survey Archaeological Division on the 20 August 1954 at the possible site of the Roman and Medieval West Gate at the top of High West Street, Dorchester. His site notes are recorded in the OS record card as follows.
The area is covered by a modern Roman road. The site of the gate falls on the line of the Roman wall. (1)
[It is now considered more likely that the west gate lies further south, close to the junction of West Walks and Prince's Street].
