EDO4781 - Possible site of Roman and Medieval South Gate, South Street, Dorchester. Ordnance Survey Site Visit.

A site visit was conducted by J. Rigg of the Ordnance Survey Archaeological Division on the 26 July 1954 at the possible site of the Roman and Medieval South Gate, Dorchester. His site notes are recorded in the OS record card as follows. The probable foundations of the main South Gate of the town - in South Street - were struck when a surface drain was laid in 1911-2. The drainage plan of 1911 was consulted in the Borough Engineer's Office. It revealed that the drain referred to cut through the site of the gate as shown. OS plans prior to 1910 place the gate in the present position.
