Description
Southern Archaeological Services conducted an Archaeological Evaluation on 24 July 1995 at Bridge Street Island, Christchurch in advance of the construction of a proposed flood defence scheme for the river Avon.
The evaluation comprised the excavation of two machine dug trenches on the site of a proposed flood bank. This revealed peat and alluvial deposits, along with an undated (but pre-modern) ditch, and evidence of modern activity.
Both trenches measured 10m x 1.5m and were dug to a depth of 1.2m.
Trench 2, located at the western end of the proposed flood bank, contained no evidence for human activity apart from a modern made ground layer.
