Description

Boys from Sherborne School, under the direction of their housemaster Mr. G.J.B. Watkins, conducted an excavation in the kitchen garden of Elmdene, South Street during 1952. The excavation was immediately to the west of Culverhayes car park where Roman remains had been discovered during the digging of drains the previous year. Romano-British relics were discovered in this excavation at a similar level. However, they were greatly disturbed, partly by a stone culvert. Further digging is intended on less disturbed ground.
