Description
AC Archaeology conducted a desk based assessment during May 1996, of the archaeological implications of proposed redevelopment of part of Sherborne School. The site lies within the former western boundary of the Sherborne Abbey precinct. In post-medieval times the site was recorded as ‘Abbey Mill’ and is likely to be on the same site as a 12th century or earlier mill granted to the Abbey by Bishop Roger of Salisbury. The site of the post-medieval and later mill house lies beyond the development site, although one of the 18th century mill complex buildings is likely to be affected by the development. It is further possible that waterlogged deposits associated with the former course of the mill stream, Coombe Stream, may be disturbed. The majority of the development, however, will take place within the footprint of buildings still in use, which may stand on top of archaeological deposits that cannot be evaluated in advance of development.
