Description

AC Archaeology conducted an archaeological desk top assessment of the proposed residential development at Tinney’s Lane, Sherborne during 1996. The work comprised the collation and assessment of existing archaeological, documentary and cartographic documents, as well as a site visit. This demonstrated that the site lies in a area where archaeological material of most periods has been identified. In particular, a Neolithic settlement and Bronze Age cremation cemetery to the NW, and 16th-17th century pits immediately to the south. The field name ‘Rack Close’ suggests that the area may also have been used in the medieval period for the drying of cloth. Furthermore, the lack of activity on the site since 1570 might suggest that any archaeological deposits will be well preserved (1).
