Description

AC Archaeology conducted a desk based assessment of land adjacent to Greenhill House, Sherborne during 1997 in support of a planning application for the construction of a new building adjacent to Greenhill House. The work comprised the study of existing archaeological, cartographic and documentary sources as well as a site visit. Greenhill House is part of Sherborne School and is of 16th century date with later additions. The Green itself is of at least early 15th century date suggesting that Greenhill House may be on the site of an earlier structure, although no evidence for this has been found. Similarly, the adjacent development site may also have been occupied by medieval structures, possibly demolished after the capture of Sherborne by Parliament during the civil war. (1)
