Description

AC archaeology carried out an evaluation of the site of the Bridport Community Hospital, prior to the construction of the hospital in 1993. Five machine trenches were excavated in the areas not affected by previous disturbance and landscaping. Trenches 4 & 5 formed a T shape in the south west part of the site, measuring 68m and 37m long. The natural Bridport Sands were at a depth of 0.65m at the northern end and over 1.1m at the southern end. Above the natural was a layer of brown clayey sand colluvium, with a layer of topsoil 0.1m thick. A 1.7m wide linear feature running NW-SE was found near the northern end of Trench 4, probably a continuation of Ditch 28 in Trench 3.
