Description
Giffords undertook an archaeological evaluation in advance of the partial demolition of the existing West Pier and the construction of a new West Pier at West Bay, Bridport, during March 2003. Three trial trenches were excavated along the length of the pier and a watching brief during the excavation of an engineer’s test pit.
The trenches (1-3) measured 3.2m by 2.0m across and were excavated to a depth of between 1.25m-2.1m. The evaluation exposed part of the mid-19th century pier constructed by John Coode. No earlier phases of pier construction were exposed by the works. Some details of the substantial 19th century structure have been elucidated by the archaeological works.
