Description
AC archaeology undertook a watching brief during the redevelopment of land at 56-58 West Street, Bridport between November 2003 and January 2004. This comprised the monitoring of the excavation of the footings trenches for a new block of residential buildings to the rear of the property and during the excavation of six pile-capping pits immediately behind the existing building on the South Street frontage.
A layer of post-medieval soil, buried beneath modern levelling deposits was exposed above the natural. Two mortared limestone and brick walls were found at the southern end of the site, possibly belonging to a building on the north side of Rope Walks. A large 19th century rubbish pit was also found towards the southern end of the site. The mortared limestone footings of a wall along the eastern boundary of the site was revealed in one of the pile-capping pits. Two medieval sherds were recovered from the spoil tip, otherwise no evidence for medieval activity was noted. (1)
