Description
A watching brief was undertaken during groundworks for the construction of a block of three flats on land to the west of 13 Gundry Lane, Bridport by Exeter Archaeology in September 2006-October 2007.
The watching brief did not reveal any activity dating before the 19th century. Six pits cut into the natural clay, containing varying quantities of rubble, brick, slate, mortar, glass and 19th-20th century pottery, were found. A rubble-filled drain containing 19th-20th century pottery was also revealed. Along the northern edge of the site were the remains of a stone wall, probably a former boundary/garden wall.
Two service trenches extending into the road revealed the remains of a collapsed stone drain and part of brick vaulted drain running along the length of the road.
The results of this watching brief suggest the site was probably a yard.
