Description

Arrowhead Archaeology undertook a watching brief during a development at the rear of the former police station on Prout Hill, Beaminster during June 2007. The development comprised the reduction of the floor level within a former police station stable (built 1860) and the excavation of footings and reduction of ground levels for the construction of an extension. (1) Within the standing building, the remains of a cobbled floor, wall and drains of a building preceding the existing 1860 building was exposed. This earlier building is marked on the Beaminster Tithe map and was probably a stable. The area outside the building was disturbed by 18th and 19th century activity. The finds included small quantities of unstratified Roman and medieval pottery and a group of late 19th century pottery including probable earthenware from the Beaminster kilns.
