Description

Wessex Archaeology conducted an archaeological evaluation and watching brief on land to the rear of the King's Arms Hotel. Christchurch during 2007 on behalf of Orchard Homes and Developments Ltd. This work followed on from an earlier evaluation on the same site in 2006 [1]. The work comprised the excavation of a single evaluation trench in an area previously inaccessible to archaeological investigation. This trench revealed the natural channel edge of the Mill Stream which had been filled in with late post-medieval and modern deposits effectively raising the ground level in this area. Archaeological features revealed in the trench also dated to the late post-medieval and modern periods. Monitoring of the foundation trenches for the proposed development recorded severley truncated deposits as well as made ground and the edge of the natural river channel. A stone built well and a brick built well or soak-away were also recorded.
