EDO5323 - Corfe Castle; observation and recording of finds excavated by rabbits in John's Ditch 1943

During the summer of 1943 G Dru Drury recorded artefacts thrown up by the excavations of rabbits which were particularly numerous in the vicinity of John's Ditch, the great ditch forming the southern limit of the middle or west ward of Corfe Castle. Drury recorded numerous finds of kitchen waste (including animal bone and oyster shell), Builder's and workshop waste (including fragments of Cornish slate), metal objects, miscellaneous objects and pottery. The last type comprised almost entirely medieval coarse and glazed wares, although a single sherd of Black Burnished ware was a notable exception.
