Description

An archaeological evaluation for a proposed New Sports Hall at Gillingham School, Gillingham, Dorset (ST 81352655), was carried out by AC archaeology during October 2003. The evaluation consisted of three hand-excavated trial pits, each 2m x 2m in plan and located in an area formerly containing class rooms and outbuildings. Two trial pits revealed evidence of relatively modern disturbance, comprising truncation and levelling on the site, whilst one trial pit revealed an undisturbed soil profile. No evidence for archaeological activity was encountered, with only a small quantity of c19th/20th century artefacts recovered.
