Description
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken by Wessex Archaeaology during 1991 in advance of the proposed development of Waitrose supermarket at Chantry Fields, Gillingham. The evaluation comprised the machine excavation of 7 trenches and a geophysical survey. This revealed extensive archaeological deposits of 12th to 14th century date, with a concentration in the north-west corner of the site. The excavated features consisted of ditches and post-holes; no structures were identified. The deposits were associated with extant earthwork features. Unlike the results of excavations in 1990 immediately to the south, on the line of the new relief road, no deposits or structures of 7th-century date were recorded.
