Description

A desk-based assessment of a site proposed for development of a supermarket. The principal archaeological interest is the former Barton Manor House, dating to the middle ages, and thought to have been on a site now to be covered by the cattle market. However, the results of previous archaeological investigations and a review of the documentary evidence suggest that the manor house may have been located to the north of Christy's Lane, and so not affected by the development proposal. The implications of a variety of circumstantial evidence for archaeological remains, including finds of medieval pottery and Roman coins, are considered but the authors conclude that their significance cannot be fully assessed from the available evidence.
