Description

Members of the Shaftesbury and District Archaeological Group investigated a structure in the grounds of the Fountain Inn. The structure was reported to them as a well but proved to be a cistern built of brick with interior surfaces rendered. The inside was 15ft 6in long, 10ft 10in wide, and 6ft 6in deep from the central point of the arched roof, and contained about 4ft of water. The roof was sagging and soil removed from above to reduce the danger of a cave-in.
