Description

Trial excavations, directed by Alan Hunt of Weymouth College and assisted by members of the Shaftesbury and District Archaeological Group, were undertaken in 1978 to determine whether any remains of the medieval or post-medieval churches survived below the present nineteenth century church, and to determine whether forthcoming reconstruction (the church having been declared redundant) might affect any such remains. Stone (greensand) wall foundations and a flagstone floor were found some 1.25m below the modern floor of the south aisle. The position of the south wall suggested that it lay very slightly to the north of the Scott church. It was thought unlikely that building operations involved in the change of use would disturb archaeological remains.
