Description
Observations during the excavation of a small pit (approximately 0.5m by 0.5m by 0.5m) beneath the paved floor of a former courtyard area. The groundworks were connected with minor structural alterations.
The base of the pit proved to be covered by a number of overlapping Purbeck Limestone roof tiles, similar to those laid along the eaves of the present roof of the building. The area exposed was too small to allow a confident interpretation to be made, but it was clear that the slabs were placed in position when the courtyard was an open feature. It was suggested that the slabs might represent a disturbed area of pavement, or a garden drain.
