Description

This watching brief took place at short notice due to an administrative oversight. The site was visited on the 18th of January 1996 in good weather conditions, however only natural daylight was available and the level of lighting was poor due to it being overcast on that day. Already removed topsoil revealed a clean brown clay subsoil. In the south-west corner of the site, about 800mm of clay subsoil had been removed to level the site. In other places only the topsoil which was about 300-400mm deep had been removed along with the clay subsoil. At this point the excavation of foundation trenches was nearly complete and had been dug through the clay sub soil to a depth of approximately 1 metre. An archaeological inspection of the entire site was carried out, but no archaeological features or finds were observed. It is unlikely that significant archaeological features had been overlooked.
