Description

A desk-based assessment carried out by L-P Archaeology in relation to proposed redevelopment of a site at Kings High School, Bournemouth. Searches were made of the Dorset Historic Environment Record and the National Monuments Record using a 1km radius search area. The 1889 Ordnance Survey map shows the area as farmland, surrounded by heath and more agricultural fields. Map regressions shows development encroaching on the surrounding area by the early 20th century. The 1925 Ordnance Survey maps shows the study site stayed the same, but during the 1930s some development occurred on the southern and western edges of the site and continued, so that by the 1960s the site is shown on OS maps as being a fully developed school. Several Palaeolithic find spots are recorded around the study site, as well as later prehistoric material, and three Bronze Age barrows in the vicinity. The authors assessed the archaeological potential of the proposed development as high for Palaeolithic, low to moderate for the Mesolithic, moderate for the Bronze Age, low to moderate for the Iron Age, and low for Roman to Post Medieval.
