Niall Oakey carried out a desk-based assessment of the site at Abbey Street and the surrounding area. This consisted of the use of publicly accessible sources such as The Dorset Sites and Monument Record, the Dorset Archives Service, Dorchester Library, and Sherborne Library for published sources, maps and listed building information. This was combined with a site visit on the 30th January 2003 in order to establish any upstanding remains, its current status, and to assess the impact of past usage on any potentially existing archaeological deposits.
This assessment was not sufficient to rule out the possibility of archaeological deposits on the site. Therefore, the excavation of three evaluation trenches was postulated, on areas likely to be disturbed by the development. Two 2m by 2m and one 5m by 1.5m hand excavated trenches have been proposed in response to the desk based assessment.
