Description

Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Brimble, Lea and Partners to carry out an archaeological evaluation. Three trial trenches were dug in areas identified in a desk-based assessment as likely to have surviving ground surfaces and below-ground archaeology. Three trial trenches were excavated by machine using a 1m wide toothless bucket, which went down by 0.2m spits to a maximum depth of 1.2m. Two were 15m long and the third 7m long. No deposits of archaeological significance were observed and only one sherd of 14-15th century pottery was collected. In view of the limited intact ground surfaces on the site due to the previous building works located there, the archaeologists on site concluded that the proposed development was not likely to affect deposits of archaeological significance.
