Description

AC Archaeology carried out an archaeological assessment of land proposed for development, off Dorchester Road. The site covers an area of approximately 3.5 hectares. This study involved the assessment of information from various sources including the Dorset County Council Sites and Monuments Record (DCCSMR), the Dorset County Record Office (DCRO) and Dorchester Reference Library, other published or available unpublished sources, and the record of previous geotechnical investigations on site. A site walkover was also included. The development area lies on the western fringe of the medieval historic core of the village of Stratton. Iron Age and Romano-British pottery have been found to the east of the site, raising the possibility of very early settlement. The route of the Roman Road crosses the north east corner of the site, though it does not survive as a visible earthwork. It may survive under the boundary bank by the road.
