Description
AC archaeology was commissioned by BP Exploration Operating Company Limited to carry out an archaeological assessment, aimed at investgating what if any effect the construction and use of this track may have had on the protected archaeological deposits, and to establish a method for removing the track which affect the deposits.
The assessment consisted of six 1m by 1m square test pits (TPs), excavated by hand. TPs 1 and 2 were dug as control piuts, over previously found archaeological deposits. The remainder were dug on the stone track itself. They were all excavated to the underlying natural sand, except for numbers 2 and 3, which were placed to reveal structural deposits, the wall and rubble remains of a 3rd centur building.
The surface of the track has been compacted to varying degrees, though there is no evidence to suggest the buuried structure examined had suffered from compaction of the road, and that the removal of stone and geotextile membrane will not cause any disturbance to buried archaeological deposits.
