Description

Observations and recording by Terrain Archaeology during building of a new house next to The Old Forge in Powerstock. Groundworks consisted of the stripping of the topsoil from the footprint of the house, approximately 13m by 10m. This was done using a mechanical excavator equipped with a toothed bucket. This was followed by the excavation of footings trenches. The topsoil was dark brown clay soil which was 0.2m thick on the northern side, and 0.5m deep on the southern side. The only finds found in this layer were pottery and glass jars from the late 19th and 20th centuries. A sondage was machine dug on the southern side to show the topsoil was deeper in this area but still lay on top of the natural. No archaeological finds or features were discovered during the excavations.
