Description
In July 2006, Terrain Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation of land at present occupied by James Brothers Ltd, 19 Blandford Road, Hamworthy, Poole (NGR SZ00379017), which is proposed for new development. it is not possible to evaluate the whole of the proposed development site because of the existing business, but six small trenches were excavated in the eastern and northern parts of the area. Two clay-lined pits and three small ditches were found in the south-eastern part of the site and appear to be associated with Late Iron Age salt working activity. Similar evidence was recovered to determine the relationship with the Roman military ‘fort’ or supply base which lies on this part of the Hamworthy peninsula. (1)
