EDO570 - Child's Garage, Long Street, Sherborne; observations and recording 1996

Wessex Archaeology conducted an archaeological watching brief during groundworks for the construction of 17 retirement properties at the former Child’s Garage, Long Street in 1996. The watching brief showed that much of the site had been effected by quarrying and/or post-medieval to modern garden features. 19th and 20th century walling and a stone culvert associated with buildings visible on historic maps was also noted. The quarry pits almost certainly relate to small scale activity associated with the construction of nearby properties in the post-medieval period. The possibility of the importation of garden soils in the post-medieval period means that residual sherds of medieval pottery my not derive from the current site. No earlier features such as those seen in the previous evaluation were recorded during the watching brief, suggesting that the evaluation trenches were fortuitously located over small undisturbed areas (1).
