EDO5700 - 59 St Mary Street, Weymouth; observations and recording 2011

Observations during digging of foundation trenches for a new building to the rear. Reduction from original ground level varied between 700mm and 1000 mm. The archaeologist on site concluded that much of the area had been disturbed by relatively modern activity. No features or finds of medieval or earlier date were present, but a cluster of two post-medieval pits, and a third cut feature which may have been another pit or a ditch, cut into what may have been a buried soil surface were noted at the southern edge of the site. The two pits and the third cut feature contained domestic debris including pottery of 17th and 18th century date, some of it imported pottery of Chinese and Dutch origin.
