EDO5715 - 1 Sarum Street, Poole: building recording 1971

Partial demolition of the rear of 1 Sarum Street in December 1971 revealed a much older timber structure hidden by nineteenth century additions and alterations. This was investigated and recorded by R Machin. The ground floor appeared to be divided by a cross passage and doorway and two windows in stone east wall appear to be original and the north wall is of stone rubble with fire places serving both ground and first floor. The first floor was a single large room with timber framing and roof trusses of collar and tie beam type with jowled principal posts and arch wind braces. The date of the original building is not clear but is probably late medieval and the large first floor room suggests it was used for a public or guild function.
