Cotswold Archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation of the route of the proposed Corfe Mullen to Salisbury Water Transfer Scheme between July and December 2012. A total of 47 trenches were excavated in Dorset.
Trench 102 was located to the south east of Tarrant Keyneston village on the parish boundary between Shapwick and Tarrant Keyneston. It measured 15m by 1.8m. It was positioned to evaluate geophysical anomaly 263. A ditch (102003) which corresponded to geophysical anomaly 263 was partially excavated. It measured 3.3m wide and at least 1.1m deep. It was not excavated to its full depth and its overall profile is not known. It was filled with silt deposits and some more flinty bands. There is some slight suggestion of a bank on its northern side. A single sherd of Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery was recovered, together with three possible sling stones. [1] [2]
