Description

Cotswold Archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation of the route of the proposed Corfe Mullen to Salisbury Water Transfer Scheme between July and December 2012. A total of 47 trenches were excavated in Dorset. Trench 74 was located on Keyneston Down to the south east of Buzbury Rings and adjacent to a rectangular enclosure. It measured 30m by 1.8m. It was positioned to evaluate geophysical anomaly 236. A ditch (74004) which corresponded to geophysical anomaly 236 was excavated in the central part of the trench and proved to have a V-shaped profile measuring 2.9m wide and 1.04m deep. It filled with chalky deposits near the base and silty soil above and it contained 30 sherds of Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery in one of the upper fills. There is some slight suggestion of a bank on its western side. There appears to have been a small recut on its western side. Another, undated, small ditch or gully (74003) lay further to the south east. A possible tree throw (740120) lay between them. [1] [2] The record for this event has been created with support from Wessex Water.
