Description

Cotswold Archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation of the route of the proposed Corfe Mullen to Salisbury Water Transfer Scheme between July and December 2012. A total of 47 trenches were excavated in Dorset. Trench 19 was located on Keyneston Down to the east of Buzbury Rings . It measured 30m by 1.8m, with an extension in the central part and at the northern end. It was positioned to evaluate geophysical anomaly 231. The terminus of an east/west ditch (19002) was discovered that corresponded to this anomaly. It was about 2.5m wide and 1.2m deep with an eroded V-profile. No artefacts other than three worked flint flakes were recovered from this ditch. Another wide NE-SW aligned ditch terminus (19010) was found further south. It was 2.25m wide and 1.25m deep with a round bottomed profile. A cluster of 48 possible sling stones were found in the fill of this ditch. No other artefacts were found. [1] [2] These ditches probably formed part of the extensive prehistoric field system recorded in this area. [3] The record for this event has been created with support from Wessex Water.
