EDO5842 - Corfe Mullen to Salisbury Water Transfer Scheme Evaluation Trench 20

Cotswold Archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation of the route of the proposed Corfe Mullen to Salisbury Water Transfer Scheme between July and December 2012. A total of 47 trenches were excavated in Dorset. Trench 20 was located on Keyneston Down to the east of Buzbury Rings . It measured 30m by 1.8m. It was positioned to evaluate geophysical anomaly 229. A small ditch (20006) running roughly E-W was uncovered corresponding to this anomaly. It was about 1.3m wide and 0.3m deep with an irregular rounded profile. The character of the fill suggested the former existence of a bank on the north side. No artefacts were recovered from this ditch. A small gully (20002) oriented NW-SE was found to the south. No artefacts were recovered from this feature. [1] [2] Ditch 20006 formed part of one of the field boundaries in the extensive prehistoric field system recorded in this area.
