Description
Cotswold Archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation of the route of the proposed Corfe Mullen to Salisbury Water Transfer Scheme between July and December 2012. A total of 47 trenches were excavated in Dorset.
Trench 20 was located on Keyneston Down to the east of Buzbury Rings . It measured 30m by 1.8m. It was positioned to evaluate geophysical anomaly 229. A small ditch (20006) running roughly E-W was uncovered corresponding to this anomaly. It was about 1.3m wide and 0.3m deep with an irregular rounded profile. The character of the fill suggested the former existence of a bank on the north side. No artefacts were recovered from this ditch. A small gully (20002) oriented NW-SE was found to the south. No artefacts were recovered from this feature. [1] [2]
Ditch 20006 formed part of one of the field boundaries in the extensive prehistoric field system recorded in this area. [3]
The record for this event has been created with support from Wessex Water.
