EDO5844 - Corfe Mullen to Salisbury Water Transfer Scheme Evaluation Trench 66

Cotswold Archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation of the route of the proposed Corfe Mullen to Salisbury Water Transfer Scheme between July and December 2012. A total of 47 trenches were excavated in Dorset. Trench 66 was located on Rawston Down to the north east of Buzbury Rings. It measured 30m by 1.8m. It was positioned to evaluate geophysical anomalies 218 and 219. A NW-SE oriented ditch (66002) was found at the northern end of the trench, which corresponded to geophysical anomaly 218. This ditch was about 1.25m wide and 0.5m deep with a V-shaped profile. The character of the fills suggested the presence of a former bank to the north. No artefacts were recovered. Three E-W aligned linear features, the central of which corresponded to geophysical anomaly219, were investigated but shown to be modern cultivation features.[1] [2] The record for this event has been created with support from Wessex Water.
