Description

Tree-ring dating of timbers from the floor of the belfry, to inform repair work of the late fifteenth-century tower, extensively rebuilt in the nineteenth century. Of eight samples taken (all oak) four were dated: the two major east-west foundation beams and two subsidiary beams, the latter possibly having come from a single parent tree. The foundation beams dated to the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century, and the subsidiary beams to the mid- to late-fifteenth century, suggesting that the present floor comprises old timbers reset into their current positions at some time after the late fifteenth century.
