Description
Two 2 by 1m trenches were dug by hand within the area of the proposed church extension. Trench 1 was positioned to investigate an area of sloping ground and Trench 2 was placed on even ground at the eastern end of the site. Results indicated that there were no cut graves to the north of the church. No features were observed in Trench 1 where made ground to a depth of around 1m was encountered, containing fragmented human bone and the remains of two neonate burials. This made ground may have been created during rebuilding and enlargement of the church in 1870. A thinner layer of made ground was seen in Trench 2. No graves were identified, but several other features were recorded. The earliest of these was a flint and brick wall, possibly the remains of a north transept added in 1834 and demolished during later work. Later features included a ceramic drain pipe.
