Description

AC archaeology carried out observations and recording during removal by machine of topsoil/subsoil within the footprint of a new garden store, an area approximately 16m by 14.5m. A soakaway pit was excavated to a depth of 2.1m in the south-west corner of the site. The truncated remains of two clay-lined pits and a spread of burnt hearthstone were recorded. These features were thought to indicate industrial activity, possibly being the remains of an oven or furnace and troughs of some sort, and likely to be a continuation of industrial activity recorded nearby on Woodhouse Hill. A deep deposit of overburden was recorded over much of the site; it contained later Romano-British pottery and three stele, and was also thought to be associated with the Woodhouse Hill settlement.
