Description
Observations and recording during installation of seven vehicular control bollards at two locations in South Walks. Five were relatively shallow and impacted only upon modern made ground deposits. Two retractable bollards, one at each location, required excavation to a depth of 1m below ground level. The upper fill of the Roman defensive ditch was encountered at 0.9m below ground level immediately east of Acland Road, and clean natural chalk identified at 0.85m below ground level adjacent to Icen Way. This latter may represent a break in defences, perhaps for a south-eastern gate, or a truncation of ditch fills due to the insertion of Icen Way.
