Description

An evaluation to identify archaeological constraints and assist in the design of a proposed cycle path on the route of the former Merchants' Railway, comprised hand excavation of six trenches. The route of the railway is marked in places by the presence of stone sleeper blocks, and the trenches were located to identify additional, buried blocks and to provide insight into their layout and the extent of disturbance since the railway was abandoned. The two most northerly trenches revealed preservation of below-ground remains, while those south of the Verne did not.
